DIY Football Jersey Ornament

If you follow me on social media, you know that I am a huge Denver Broncos football fan. I grew up in Colorado and have watched the Broncos for as long as I can remember. I have several Denver Broncos Christmas ornaments but this year I decided to make my own Denver Broncos football jersey ornament. Player 18 is Peyton Manning who happens to be my second favorite quarterback of all time.

My Denver Broncos football jersey ornament is day 16 of the 31 Days of Handmade Ornaments blog hop. Each day in October, one blogger will share a new Christmas ornament. Why October? We wanted you to get an early start on your crafting of course! You can see all the amazing ornaments at the end of this post.

Supplies:

The colors of your ribbon and paper will vary based on your team’s colors. The Denver Broncos colors are orange and blue so here’s what I used. All the links in the supplies are affiliate links.

Instructions:

1. Wrap the orange ribbon around the cookie cutter. The spool of ribbon was too large to pass through the cookie cutter so I cut a length of ribbon and gathered it into a big ball. I added hot glue where I started the ribbon. The ribbon was pulled tightly and overlapped slightly as I wrapped it. I used hot glue every couple of wraps and anytime there was an abrupt change in the shape of the cookie cutter such as peaks or large angles. I used about 12 inches of ribbon but the length may vary based on how much the ribbon overlaps.

This is the ribbon wrapped football jersey cookie cutter.

2. Trace the cookie cutter onto the orange cardstock. One side of the cookie cutter is designed to cut the cookie and is thinner than the grip side. We want to use the grip side DOWN in this step. I traced the grip side of the wrapped cookie cutter onto the orange cardstock. I found that standing up helped me make a more accurate outline.

I cut out the orange jersey.

3. Create the jersey number. The Collegiate Heavy Outline font from fontspace.com is perfect for a jersey number. I opened Silhouette Studio and used the text tool to type my jersey number at 110 pt size. I started separating the layers by right clicking and choosing Release Compound Path.

Then right click again and choose Ungroup.

I deleted the middle cut lines from all the shapes.

Next I want to group the inner layers and separate them from the outer layers. I selected the layers I wanted to group together and then right clicked and selected Group. Then I separated the two layers.

I used the Silhouette and mat to cut out the top 18 in white cardstock and the bottom 18 in dark blue cardstock. Next I used my Xyron X sticker maker to put adhesive on the back of the numbers. The cardstock is always loaded in face up.

I added the numbers to the orange jersey.

4. Add the ribbon to hang the ornament. My glitter ribbon was too wide so I cut it in half lengthwise. I attached the ribbon to the valley at the top of the jersey. I ran the ribbon through the ornament and made sure that both sides were even. Then I crossed one piece of ribbon over the other perpendicular to the ornament. This will ensure that the ornament hangs correctly on the tree. Double knot the ribbon on the ornament and then tie the ribbon ends together.

5. Adhere the cardstock to the back of the ornament. As a scrapbooker, I am picky about adhesives. The area to add adhesive to the cardstock wasn’t wide so I wanted to use a permanent adhesive that would be precise in its application. Glossy Accents is perfect for this with its precision tip. I quickly applied the Glossy Accents on the grip side of the cookie cutter and then pressed my paper onto it. Glossy Accents dries clear.

This Denver Broncos football jersey ornament is ready to hang on my Christmas tree!

DIY Captain America Card

My son has a friend “J” who loves super heroes. Whenever I see J, he is always wearing super hero gear. We are headed to his birthday party this weekend so I made him a Captain America birthday card. And like all great cards, I made sure the Captain America card would stand up for fun display value. This project was perfect for the June Silhouette Challenge “party” theme. Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of this post for more party ideas using the Silhouette.

{ Disclosure: There are affiliate links in this post }

Supplies:

Instructions:

1. I designed my card and cut it using the Silhouette. For the card base, I made a small portion of the bottom of the back of the card flat so it would stand up.  The Silhouette cut shapes for the Captain America card were made using textured red, white and blue card stock. Different shapes of the same color were cut at the same time. There were two white circles so I could have one for the inside of the card.

2. Run the white circles, small red circle, blue circle and white star through the Xyron 510 with the permanent adhesive. Load all the papers into the Xyron with the textured side facing up except one of the white circles. The adhesive is applied on the bottom of paper so this allows for the non-textured side of the white circle to be placed on the inside of the card so that it is easier to write on. I use Xyron adhesive on all my cards because it adds adhesive to the entire shape.

3. Lift the shiny layer off the Xyron adhesive sheet. Then layer the card stock to assemble the card.

Voila! J’s card is ready for his birthday party this weekend.

Coffee or Latte Container Christmas Gift Tags

My name is Kelly and I am addicted to chai tea lattes. We have a Tassimmo machine so I can make the single serve portions at home but every once in a while I go out to have a latte with a friend. A few weeks ago I took an Instagram photo while at Starbucks and inspiration struck.

The baristas wrote our names on our cups and that reminded me of names on gift tags.

Supplies:

Instructions:

1. Download a file with the design (for personal use only):

  • PDF file (added because of many requests)

2. Use the Silhouette Portrait, Mat and Studio software to cut out the different pieces. I used white to cut the container tops, craft paper to cut the container sleeves and patterned paper and glitter cardstock to cut out the containers. Each container is also backed with a container cut from white cardstock.

3. Apply adhesive to the cuts (except for the white cardstock container bases) and assemble them to create the containers. I used my Xyron 510 but you can use any paper adhesive.

4. Use a pen to write your to/from on the container sleeve. I used a Sharpie fine tip pen.

Now check out all the other awesome ideas on how to enhance brown paper packages this Christmas!

DIY Christmas Gift Tags With Scrapbook Paper Scraps And Free Cut File

I started paper scrapbooking 11 years ago so you can imagine the amount of scrapbook paper scraps I have. I store the scraps in folders and always look for ways to use them. When I had the idea for these Christmas gift tags, I knew using paper scraps would be perfect! There are four different tags featuring a star, Christmas tree, round ornament and gingerbread man.

{Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links}

Supplies:

Directions:

1. Download my free Christmas Tags cut file for Silhouette Studio. This file is only for your personal use. I cut the small rectangles of scrapbook paper with my paper trimmer but I also included rectangles of that size in the cut file.

2. Use the Silhouette machine, mat and white cardstock to print and cut the tags. Here are detailed print and cut directions for Silhouette Studio version 2.

  • Open my Christmas Tags cut file in Silhouette Studio (SS).
  • Place cardstock into the printer.
  • Select File->Send To Silhouette from the SS menu.
  • Choose Click here to print in the Print Image window.
  • Select Continue to cutting page.
  • Place the printed paper onto a Silhouette mat and load into the Silhouette.
  • Select Continue.
  • Select Detect Automatically. The Silhouette will now detect your registration marks so it will know where to cut the design.
  • Select Cut.

Remove the tags from the Silhouette mat.

3. Pick one tag. Add paper adhesive to the back of a piece of of 2 inch tall by 1.75 inch wide piece of scrapbook paper. Hold it underneath the opening in the tag and line it up as desired. Fold the other side of the tag down and press down on the scrapbook paper. The scrapbook paper should now be adhered to the inside of the to/from part of the tag.

4. Add adhesive to the inside of the cutout part of the tag. Then fold the tag and press the two different sides together to seal the adhesive.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each tag.

Your tags are ready for gifting!

Persimmon Paper Roses

The theme for the March Silhouette challenge project is paper. As a scrapbooker, that is probably the medium that I am most comfortable with for any project. I contemplated many different projects for this challenge post but the decision was easily made when I learned of something going on in my class. His preschool teacher had surgery last week. I decided to make her some persimmon paper roses to cheer her up during her recovery.

{Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links}

A few days before her surgery I asked her to tell me her favorite color. She was very specific about her favorite color being persimmon with green a close second. I was not sure about the persimmon color but she told me that it is kind of a deep orange color with a bit of pink. I went to the craft store and looked in their colored cardstock and there was a paper that was actually called persimmon! I grabbed a few sheets and then went over to the floral section to get some cloth stem wire. Next I chose some green marble accents to put in the bottom of the vase so I could arrange the bouquet. I used green marble accents but could have used any color because you can’t really see into the vase.

Supplies for 12 flower bouquet:

Directions:

1. Buy the 3D paper rose (Design #:11563) from the Silhouette online store. Import the file into Silhouette Studio and re-size the shape so two can fit on one 8.5×11 sheet of cardstock. Cut the file six times using all 6 pieces of 8.5×11 colored cardstock. The result is 12 flower shapes.

2. Heat up the glue gun.

3. Cut one piece of cloth stem wire to desired length. I used lengths of 9, 10 and 11 inches.

4. Add a small line of hot glue near the edge of the straight strip on the shape. The line is only about half the length of the paper strip so that the stem wire won’t show. Add the stem wire to the hot glue and fold it over to make the first turn in the rose.

6. (Optional) Spray the shape with water so that it will bend and curl easier. This is optional but I did do one or two roses without the water spray and they were much harder to do. Beware that some of the color may bleed onto your hands. I think my fingers will be persimmon for a day or two.

5. While holding the shape, turn the stem wire over and over again so that the paper wraps around it and the paper. When the last part of the shape has been folded around the wire, use the hot glue to secure it to the paper and to the stem. You will notice my fingers are the color of the paper in the photo below due to the color bleeding from the water spray.

You really have to play around with wrapping the rose. There were a few roses where I put hot glue on the paper as I went to hold the rose’s shape but the roses turned out very tightly wound. The looser roses are a result of me letting the paper relax a little bit before I glue down the end to the stem.

6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for all the flowers.

7. Place marble accents in the bottom of the vase to form a base for the flowers to sit on.

8. Add the flowers to the vase and arrange them. I had to position them into the marble accents at the bottom of the vase to get them to stay. When I had the flowers where I wanted them, I added more marbles in between the flower stems and that helped hold my flowers in place

9. (Optional) Hot blue the ribbon onto the vase.

Now you have a beautiful, maintenance free bouquet of flowers to give to a friend or loved one!

My son’s preschool teacher was overwhelmed when he gave these flowers to her. Seeing how much she appreciated them almost made me cry!

DIY Dr. Seuss Photo Booth Props

I didn’t know that Dr. Seuss’s birthday was such a big deal until my children went to school. Every year the kids do a lot of crafts and even eat green eggs and ham at school! I take pictures of the students in both my children’s classes for holidays and special events so this year I thought I would make my own Dr. Seuss photo booth props for the photos.

{Disclosure: There are affiliate links in this post.}

Free Silhouette Studio Cut File
My two favorite Dr. Seuss characters are the Cat in the Hat and the Lorax. I designed the Lorax’s mustache, the Cat in the Hat’s hat and the Cat in the Hat’s bow tie in Photoshop and them imported and traced them in Silhouette Studio to create cut files.

You can download the free cut files here or by clicking on the preview above. These files are only for personal use. No commercial use is allowed.

Supplies

Directions

1. First cut the base of the hat, both mustache pieces and the bow tie with cardboard. I trimmed down the large side of a cereal box for the hat and then used one large side of the Eggo Waffle box for the bow tie and the other large side of the Eggo Waffle box for both pieces of the mustache. The Silhouette Studio coverstock setting worked perfectly for cutting the thin cardboard. If you are using boxes like I did, place the outside of the box facing up so that the back of your photo props won’t look like a cereal box.

2. Use the red glitter cardstock to cut the base of the hat and bow tie. I used the Silhouette Studio glitter cardstock setting to cut all the glitter cardstock.

3. Use the white glitter cardstock to cut the three white pieces of the hat. Here are all the pieces of the hat.

4. Use the yellow glitter cardstock to cut both mustache pieces.

5. Add adhesive to the red glitter hat and adhere it to the cardboard hat.

6. Add adhesive to the three white glitter pieces and adhere them to the red glitter hat. For the two white stripes, the one that is more curvy is the top piece. Once I figured that out, I just set the white piece on top of the hat and slid it up and down the hat until it fit correctly. I used my Xyron 510 permanent adhesive for the white paper and my ATG on the red glitter paper.

7. Add adhesive to the red  glitter bow tie and adhere it to the cardboard bow tie.

8. Add adhesive to the two yellow glitter pieces an adhere them to the corresponding cardboard pieces.

9. Place 4 small squares of 3D foam adhesive stickers on the back of the small mustache. Then adhere it to the large mustache. This gives the mustache dimension.

10. Heat up the glue gun.

11. Here’s what is completed so far.

Cut one of the wooden dowels in half (at 18 inches). I used kitchen sheers but use whatever will work for you.

12. For the mustache and the bow tie: Lay the wooden dowel on the back of the cardboard pieces next to where you want it. Place a straight layer of hot glue right next to the dowel and then placed the dowel into the hot glue. Hold the dowel down for a few seconds until the glue hardens.

13. Remember in step 1 when I mentioned to cut the cardboard with the printed side up? Well I didn’t do that for the hat so I cut another hat from red construction paper to put on the backside of my hat. I didn’t want people to be staring at my fruit loops box. 🙂

For the hat, the gluing process is the same but I had more of the stick glued to the hat to support the weight and the length of the hat. That dowel was 22 inches long.

Now the photo booth props are ready for posing!

This is just one example of awesome projects that you can make with a Silhouette Portrait!
